Alligator

An alligator is a neutral mob found in swamps and other swamp-like biomes. They are predators to other swamp animals.

Spawning

Alligators spawn in groups of 1-2 above grass blocks and mud as well as mangrove roots and their muddy variant. They share a spawn block tag with frogs via frogs_spawnable_on.json in the Vanilla data files.


Spawn biomes can be edited with a data pack via adding or removing biomes from tags/worldgen/has_alligator.json in Naturalist’s data files.

Drops

An adult alligator drops upon death:


1-3 experience orbs if killed by a player or tamed wolf.

1-7 orbs upon breeding.


Killing a hatchling yields no items nor experience.

Behavior

Alligators can exist in a passive or hostile state. The hatchlings are passive; adults are hostile when near alligator eggs or provoked (unless they’re killed in one hit).


Alligators also occasionally attack animals like pigs, cows, sheep, deer, and catfish.


Alligator prey mobs can be edited with a data pack via adding or removing mobs from tags/entity_types/alligator_hostiles.json in Naturalist’s data files.
