Tortoise

Spawning

Tortoises spawn in groups of 1-3 above above grass blocks at a light level of 9 or more in various biomes, including but not limited to swamps, jungles and deserts.

Depending on the biome they spawn in, tortoises may have different appearances.

Spawn biomes can be edited with a data pack via adding or removing biomes from tags/worldgen/has_tortoise.json in Naturalist’s data files.

Drops

An adult tortoise drops upon death:

Item drops can be edited with a data pack via editing loot_tables/entities/tortoise.json in Naturalist’s data files.

Killing a baby tortoise yields no items nor experience.

Behavior

If a player approaches a tortoise without sneaking or holding one of their favored food items, tortoises will hide in their shell and not move until the player leaves them alone.

Tortoises can be tamed and bred with dandelions, brown mushrooms, cactuses, or bamboo.

Upon breeding, one of the tortoises will look around for a spot to lay their eggs before playing a digging animation with particles. After a little while doing this they will lay a random number of eggs that will progressively hatch as time passes.
